Information for Coaches
Volunteer Coaches
Volunteer coaches are the backbone of youth sports in America. Without the thousands of parents signing up to coach youth sports every season, the youth sports world would come to a screeching halt!
The question is who are these volunteers? Are they an ex-high school or college athlete trying to re-live their sports experiences? Are they a parent of a reluctant child trying to give their child the same great experience that they had as a child? Or are they the mother or father of a child who was told, "If you don't volunteer, we don't have enough coaches!"
The truth is that all of these scenarios are pretty likely in the average volunteer-based youth sports league. That's why in 1981 NAYS developed the National Youth Sports Coaches Association - to help educate those volunteers to become the best youth sport coaches that they can be.
Overview - National Youth Sports Coaches Association
The National Youth Sports Coaches Association (NYSCA) is a membership organization and the most widely used volunteer coach training program in the nation, having trained more than 2.5 million coaches since its inception in 1981. More than 3,000 community-based agencies and organizations have offered this opportunity.
The NYSCA volunteer coach training program is designed to sensitize volunteer coaches to their responsibilities and hold them accountable to a strict Code of Conduct defined by the NYSCA Coaches' Code of Ethics Pledge.

Rules for Players and Coaches
U6 Game Rules
- All games will be played with a size 3 ball.
- All games will be split squad, with 4 players vs. 4 players and both games going on simultaneously. If a team does not have enough players to field two full teams, the games can be 3 vs. 3 or players can be borrowed from the other team.
- The goals is to get as many players participating as possible. Be flexible, please.
- Each game will consist of four 8 minute quarters, with a 2 to 3 minute break between quarters and a 5 minute halftime break.
- If for some reason a referee is not available, coaches will take turn refereeing the game.
- The goalkeeper is the defensive player closest to the goal and is allowed to use their hands.
- Goalkeepers are allowed to throw or roll the ball back into play. Punting is not allowed.
- Off-sides will not be called. Corner Kicks and Goal Kicks are not allowed. There will be no Penalty Kicks,
- Direct Kicks or Indirect Kicks. Players will throw-in the ball from the side closest to where the penalty occurred.
Rules for U6 coaches
It is a rule, not a guideline, that every player must play at least one half of every game unless a player or parent specifically request less playing time or the coach feels a player is in physical danger. It is up to the coach, not the player or his/her parents to keep track of substitutions to ensure that this happens. We don’t keep scores or standings, so coaches should try and give every player on the roster equal playing time.
Coaches and players only on the sideline designated for the players. Coaches need to send parents and others to the sidelines with the bleachers.
Only two coaches on the sideline per team, the head coach and assistant. Coaches should also stay in front of their bench. Do not run up and down the field during the game.
You set the tone for your players and parents. A quiet sideline is a good one. Never yell at the referee, one of your players, or an opposing player or coach. Bring up any issues after the game or at an appropriate time with a Division Director or Board Member. Have a great season!

There can be a maximum of three coaches on the sideline per team, the head coach and two assistants. As this is an instructional age league coaches should help each other communicate to the players the proper way to handle situations as they arise. Coaches can use the full sideline to communicate to their team but may not go beyond end line.
