MEMORANDUM RE:
History of Jupiter-Tequesta
Athletic Association ATTENTION:
All members and past members. JTAA
needs your help. A history
committee has been created by JTAA to gather historical facts relating to JTAA.
The following consists of information gathered to date.
Please help us in preserving this great league by filling in the blanks
as to any important or interesting events which you can recall for any of the
years listed below. Thank you. Years
prior to 1965 1965:
Organizational
meeting for boys in little league baseball to be held at “Jupiter-Tequesta
Athletic Association” at the team town building on Riverside Drive in
Tequesta. Little
League baseball is played at Kiwanis Park now known as Tequesta Park. Jupiter
Little League and Jupiter Kiwanis teamed up to sponsor an opening day ceremony
for baseball which included barbecue with corn on the cob served by the Kiwanis
club. There were games in the day
and at night everyone was entertained by the high school band.
V.F.W. members installed the back stops and Lainhart and Potter donated
all the materials. The
officers for Jupiter-Tequesta Athletic Association were as follows: President
– James Crawford 1st
Vice President – Bill Smallwood 2nd
Vice President – James White 3rd
Vice President – Grace Pressor Secretary
– Jack Harden Player
agent – John Brewbaker After
the breakfast “coffee” with the area’s pioneers, the family group moved to
Kiwanis Park during the afternoon for the annual games and barbecue for the
benefit of Tequesta Park and Jupiter-Hobe Sound Kiwanis Club’s boys and girls
projects and little league baseball. Teams
were from Hobe Sound, Jupiter-Tequesta and Cabana Colony. Softball
for a ladies team was trying to get organized. Jackie
Johnson was elected senior league queen. There
was in existence a Cabana Colony Woman’s Club Youth Recreation Program Fund. 1966 A
queen for each of the three Jupiter baseball leagues was selected at the July 4th,
1966 festivities at Kiwanis Park. Selected
were Charlene Fitzpatrick, Patty Horne, and Sean Grogan. There
was a boys’ club league. Hobe
Sound, Tequesta and Jupiter parents of young boys who played baseball held an
organizational meeting and election of officers for the 1966 season of the
Jupiter-Tequesta and Hobe Sound Athletic Association. Hobe
Sound Athletic Association in the past had been excused from JTAA so that they
might participate in the Martin County Athletic Organization.
Now they have asked if they can return to JTAA. According
to John Brewbaker, enough parents have volunteered to keep the little league
rolling. More volunteers are
needed. Hobe
Sound celebrates Independence Day on July 2nd in order to avoid
conflict with its neighboring Jupiter-Tequesta celebration.
The Hobe Sound program starts with its little league ball game, continued
through pole climbing, greased pig catching and bike races throughout the day.
Jupiter-Tequesta, and the community civic council coordinated
Independence Day celebration for Monday, July 4. The Jupiter-Tequesta celebration opened with a parade to the
Kiwanis recreation park where the day’s activities occured.
Featured were little league all star game, Lake Worth Allstars, a
handicapped softball game between women’s allstars and the Jaycees, a night
game between the senior league and the managers and coaches.
The little league queen was crowned and barbecue was served all day long
which was provided by civic clubs and groups.
In the evening, there was a large display of aerial fireworks in front of
the ballpark grandstands. In
the Jupiter Courier there was a request for spectators.
The article stated that “more important than reading about the team,
however, and giving only lip-service, support is to turn out and back these
teams. Many parents who have been
faithful in attendance and in backing their sons or nephews or paper-boys or
next-door neighbors have asked that everybody be encouraged to attend.
It’s more than a cheap way of having a good time; it’s an expression
of faith in the boys playing.” 1967 Jupiter-Tequesta
Athletic Association, Inc. is officially organized as a not-for-profit
corporation. The initial officers
were as follows: President
– J.E. Brewbaker Vice-President
– L.O. Corson Secretary
– Mrs. D.G. Leppert Initial

teams of 15 boys, the cost would be $466.00.
That price includes good shirts and pants that would be reusable for
about 3 years, a leather basketball for each team for games only, and to pay for
officials. Mr.
Olsen has a wing of the Coast Guard building to store all sports equipment. Mr.
Wilson Hicks was elected by the association to be head of the Coaches Advisory
Committee, which will be composed of all High and Junior High School coaches –
boys and girls. 1970 President
– R.E. Grogan, M.D. Vice
President – Herman Olsen Secretary
– John Watson Treasurer
– Louis Gelsomino Football
& Basketball programs begin A
long heated discussion among parents regarding the boys wearing metal spikes
which causes accidents. The votes
were cast out loud and it came to be that the boys were allowed to wear metal
spikes. The
JTAA Annual Registration drive commenced March 6, 1970 with a mailing to all
persons who had been members in either 1969 or 1968. Registration booths for the combined purposes of association
membership and baseball registration were manned in Tequesta, Jupiter and West
Jupiter on March 14 and 21, and at each of the “tryout days” at Kiwanis
Park. This activity netted 228
association memberships and 346 baseball registrations.
Additional baseball registrations were obtained by the coaches during the
season. Total income to the
association was $2,880.00. More
than 500 boys and girls played on 34 baseball and softball teams.
This is about 200 more than the 300 boys who participated last year, an
increase of 40%. There were no
girls’ teams last year. JTAA
affiliated with a national organization for the first time – Boys Baseball,
Inc. of Washington, Pennsylvania, a 25 – year – old offshoot of Little
League Baseball which allows participants to play more real baseball especially
in the 11 to 12 year old class. The
All-Star teams from Bronco (11-12), Pony (13-14) and Colt (15-16) leagues played
in the Boys Baseball state tournaments for the first time. Football
registration began July 20, 1970. Letters
announcing the new program were sent to all participants in this year’s boys
baseball program and registration booths were set up in Tequesta, Jupiter and
West Jupiter on August 8 and 15. To
this date, 100 boys have signed up for this program, resulting in $835 in fees
for the association. Letterhead gets made up for the Association. 1971 President
– Bill Taylor President
Elect – W. T. Dwyer Secretary
– Hamilton Treasurer
– Herman Olsen In
order to be franchised in Boy’s baseball, JTAA would have to have an insurance
program. $1,400.00 was appropriated
for insurance. The
home team manager was to have the duty of having the official scorekeeper at the
games for baseball. If
there is no umpire, there is no game. The
field at Kiwanis park was to be called Pennock Field and be dedicated with a
plaque to Pete Pennock who started the Memorial Fund. The money in the Memorial Fund was to be used to buy hoses
and sprinklers for the field. The
dedication took place on the 4th of July. 1972 President

JTAA Appreciation Picnic for the Directors, Sponsors, Coaches, and Managers. Mrs.
Kuehne presented a personal momentum plaque to Paul Walters for his personal
keeping in recognition of winning the Ed Crooks Sportsmanship Award.
This team award is a traveling trophy and is presented each year for the
team representing the best sportsmanship. Mr.
Walters was manager for the Girls’ Cardinal Softball Team. This
year starting with the Girls’ Softball and Boys’ Baseball that the sponsors
will be receiving a picture of their team along with a letter thanking them for
their support. This will continue
will sports to all those who sponsor a team. Parents
proposed that a “must play” rule in all sports be added to the rules.
Too many kids are sitting on the bench not being allowed to play.
Regardless of how good or how bad the child may be if he attends
practices, is at the games, then he must be permitted to play.
Too much emphasis on winning is being stressed by the coaches. Tom
Johannes stressed to the audience that this is in the rules and in the Creed of
the JTAA: “An objective of the
JTAA in the younger leagues is to develop good citizens as well as good athletes
and all such managers and coaches will use all players in each game.
Where circumstances prevent this, unused players will play more in the
next game. “Win-at-all-cost”
coaches are not wanted in the JTAA.” Mr.
Johannes replied that to enforce this rule, every game would have to be policed
and with 45 teams this would be impossible to do.
